The Negative Impact of Globalization in India
By Rupanshi luthra
Globalization is a process of connecting different countries through trade, investment and advanced technologies. The movement of goods, services, investments and technologies has become a common way through which countries can be connected. During the colonial period, as a consequence of Britain’s imperial ambitions, India became an exporter of primary goods and raw materials and a consumer of finished goods.
But today not everyone has benefited from
globalization. People with education, skill and wealth have made the best use of the new opportunities. On the other hand, there are many people who have not shared the benefits.
Rich people are becoming more rich and poor people are becoming more poor.Though globalization has many positive impacts on the global market but there are some negative impacts too which can't be ignored. These negative impacts are one of the main reasons that creates the gap between rich and poor.
In India, globalization has faced many criticisms in various sectors which is hard to neglect. Some of them are listed below.
1 Agriculture
Farmera are the backbone of our country so the economy of our country always depend on the farmers. Farmers of India being illiterate and poor are easily exploited by the large multinational companies. Earlier agriculture and farming used to be one of the major sources of economy for the country, but now it hardly contributes less than 20 per cent to the Growth Domestic Product or GDP of the country.
Due to globalization farmers are using high yielding variety seeds which results in loss of indigenous varieties of seeds. Farmers are unable to compete with the international imports due to adequate resourses, incentives and subsidies.
Thus, farmers are facing a vicious circle of debt trap and farmers’ suicides.
Globalization has made the agriculture prone to unscientific usage of pesticides, insecticides, fertilizers, soil toxicity and desertification which causes many health problems.
2 Business
Globalization encourages competition. Some big companies are able to compete and survive while small companies could not stand the competition and had to shut down. Due to this, many people lost their jobs and suffered a lot. Removal of trade barriers and the liberalization policies have hit the local market very badly. While globalization has benefited the rich consumers and producers but with the growing competition poor employes either prefer to work 'flexibly' i.e workers jobs are no longer secure or their wages get reduced.
Due to globalization there is an increased competition in Indian market between foreign companies and India companies. As the foreign goods are of better quality and in low cost than the Indian goods, most of the consumers prefer to buy these foreign goods resulting in the loss of Indian companies.
3 Education
The impact of globalization in the education sector is very inherent and complex. Even though there has been advancement in the education system due to globalization, but due to this the competition has also increased between the children.
With globalization, people are looking forward to higher education in foreign countries which has affected the Indian education system to a great extent. People tend to adopt foreign cultures and values and forgetting indian core values.
In today's time it is so important to be a winner that it has become a concept and the one who is the winner will be successful in his life.
Globalization promotes new techniques such as E-learning and distance Education programs because of which children prefer to do their further studies from abroad and results in the migration of skilled labour in developed countries where they get high payment and better facilities.
Globalisation has also affected the social and cultural life of the country like change in social values where western culture greeting styles such as hi! has taken place of our Indian traditional "Namaste" and change in music culture from Indian classical to western music.
So there is an urgent need for fair globalization.Fair globalisation would create opportunities for all, and also ensure that the benefits of globalisation are shared better.
The impact of globalization in india is both positive as well as negative. Some areas have suffered while some areas have benefited. People should accept globalization but should not forget their rich culture and values.
